About Us

Welcome to the website of the Australian Institute of Genealogical Studies.

Founded in 1973 by Donald Grant (1932 - 2011) and Peter Foard (1938 - 2001), its first President and Vice-President, the AIGS has grown from strength to strength. There is now an extensive Library at Blackburn where volunteer Library Assistants are available to assist members and visitors with their family research.

There is a branch in Bendigo which holds monthly meetings with invited speakers and hosts a resource collection which is housed in the Bendigo Library. They have voluntary Library Assistants to assist members and visitors with their family history. More information can be found by clicking here.

A variety of interest groups hold their own monthly meetings in the Library at Blackburn.

Since its inception, The Genealogist, the magazine of the AIGS, has been published every quarter.

An annual award for the best family history published in Australia known as the Alexander Henderson Award was created in 1973.

In memory of its founding President, the Don Grant Award for the best Australian historical biography with a family history focus was also introduced in 2012.
