How to use the Names Index for use with Casey Rate Books

The AIGS is fortunate to have in its library collection 15 CDs containing digital images of the Cranbourne Shire Rate Books beginning at 1863.  The Rate Books have been digitised in chronological order and although in most cases are easy to read, it is a time consuming search to find particular names.
To ease this search the Thursday Volunteer Indexing Group have indexed the names of both the Owner and Occupier and noted the year in which rates were charged.  The Parish or Ridings covered were much wider than the modern day area of Cranbourne.  Areas covered include:

Buln Buln
Clyde
Cranbourne township
Eumemmering
Koo Wee Rup
Lang Lang
Langwarrin
Langwarrin East

Lyndhurst
Monomeith
Quail Island
Sherwood
Skye
Tooradin
Yallock
Yannathan
Names are transcribed as they are written resulting in a variety of spellings and formats for some names.  Although it may be obvious to some people that J. Adams, J S Adams, J Smith Adams, James Adams, James S Adams, and James Smith Adams may all be the same people, the job of a transcriber is to transcribe what they see and for the genealogist to then make the connections so it is recommended that you look carefully at alternative spellings and abbreviations.
